This, That, These, and Those Are Fun and Easy is a dynamic beginner ESL lesson plan (A0–A1) that helps students master the use of this, that, these, and those to describe objects both near and far. With colorful visuals, guided grammar practice, listening tasks, and interactive speaking games, learners quickly build accuracy and confidence in using demonstratives in both singular and plural forms.
LEVEL: A0 – A1
LESSON TIME: 30 – 45 MIN
Why Choose This Lesson?
- Visual Warm-Up
Students begin by matching sentences with pictures, such as This is a ball, These are books, That is a hat, and Those are flowers. This makes the grammar clear and memorable. - Clear Grammar Focus
Step-by-step rules explain when to use this/that for singular and these/those for plural nouns, supported with multiple-choice checks for accuracy. - Guided Grammar Practice
Students complete sentences with the correct demonstrative and verb (This is, These are), while linking them to pictures for immediate reinforcement. - Listening & Matching
Learners listen to short descriptions (e.g., This is my red bag. Those are trees.) and match them to the correct pictures, improving both comprehension and accuracy. - Speaking Game
In pairs, students take turns describing secret pictures using this, that, these, or those while partners guess the correct one. This builds fluency and careful listening. - Optional Writing Extension
As homework, learners write sentences for pictures, practicing all four forms of demonstratives in context.
Ideal For:
- ESL teachers looking for a ready-to-use beginner lesson on this, that, these, and those
- A0–A1 classrooms needing visual and interactive grammar activities
- Short 30–45 minute lessons combining grammar, listening, speaking, and writing
